Amplify Training

"This was an incredible training experience! The facilitators were phenomenal, skilled, knowledgeable facilitators who perfectly complement each other. I only hope to someday emulate them in my own facilitation. I am very appreciative for the training and cannot wait to return to my community and share my experience and knowledge”

10 years ago, Girls Action organized its first Amplify – a national training on the design and facilitation of gender sensitive programs from a social justice perspective. Amplify is a platform for those leading or starting girls’ programs to share experiences, exchange ideas and have fun!

Informed by Girls Action’s expertise and by girls’ organizers across the country, this training involves: developing workshops and facilitation skills, designing programs and creating empowering spaces for girls and young women from diverse realities. As well as building a community of support, while sharing resources, experiences, and strategies.

Collectively, the skilled and creative Amplify participants, along with our dynamic facilitators, have contributed to shaping the Amplify program and Amplify Toolkit, a resource on how to apply popular education and anti-oppression to working with girls.

Each year, the program’s structure can change slightly depending on the funding we have secured. 2016 will mark the 10th edition of the Amplify training.  We are currently conducting a participatory research project to better understand the impacts and effects of the training on alumnae and organizations.  This research project will inform the design and implementation of this year’s Amplify training.

Amplify Training 2014

What is the Amplify training?

Girls’ programmers as well as those who are building programs for girls got together for five days for an intensive training session. Through creative and interactive workshops, opportunities were provided to talk about programming for girls, as well as build skills in a variety of areas.

The training included workshops about:

  • Designing and facilitating a program
  • Activities, resources and ideas for programming
  • Reinforcing the value of girl-specific programs
  • Deepening analysis of the issues we are addressing (violence prevention, self-esteem, healthy sexuality, anti-oppression, etc.)

It also provided opportunities for:

  • Networking and connecting with girls’ programs leaders from across the country
  • Sharing success stories and action strategies for girls’ programs
  • Discussing your current projects and finding a space for support
  • Relaxing, creating & celebrating!

In 2014, the Amplify Training was specifically for young women facilitators of age 18-25.

"Amplify has helped me navigate how I will change programming to be more meaningful and personal for our Girls Group participants. I will use my new knowledge to create a safer space."- Amplify 2014 Participant
