National Youth Forum 2014
The “Our History, Our Future… National Youth Forum” gathered 26 young women (aged 18-25) from across the country, to participate in a 4 day program in Quebec. The event focused on increasing participants’ knowledge and understanding of, as well as their belonging to, Canada. These young women developed skills to become self-sufficient leaders, in turn enabling them to engage with community issues, and to become role models, positively influencing other youth in their communities.
The forum aimed to increase participants’ knowledge of Canada by exploring the country’s history, geographical and cultural diversity, natural history and Aboriginal heritage through interactive workshops and activities. Participants addressed milestones in Canadian women’s history, Aboriginal history, their own identities, leadership, community action planning, artistic expression through arts and crafts, and interacting with those who have different first languages than their own (French, English, Inuktitut).
After this forum, these young women returned to their communities - to tell their own stories, and affect positive change in the diverse Canadian landscapes in which they live.
